Should you need to travel here are a few helpful tips for you to follow:Travelling: Is your journey necessary? If you need to venture out in serve weather conditions check your local travel conditions and information before leaving, don’t forget to check the route you will be taking is clear of problems; traffic updates are a must!
If there is a risk of flooding remember lives have been lost through not taking due care; do not walk or drive through flood water. Fast flowing water; as little as six inches can knock an adult over and two foot can move a car.
If you use a bike or form of motor cycle consider using another form of transport as heavy rain or high winds can easily blow you of balance or even completely off your bike causing serious injury.
Public Transport: check these are running before you leave.
Your own Car/Vehicle: A few basic but necessary checks to make before setting off.
Are you Fit to Drive: Have you slept well are you taking medication that advises you not to drive?
Tyres: are these meeting the legal tread requirements?
Wipers: are these working well or do you need to replace them?
Lights/Indicators/Controls: Check these are all working before you leave.
Petrol/Diesel: Have you enough for your journey do you know where the petrol stations are if going on a long trip?
Oil: Check at least once a month and before venturing on a long trip.
Water: Check your Anti Freeze, Radiator and Screen-wash levels regularly.
Carry an Emergency Kit in your Vehicle:
Road Atlas: You never know when your GPS can go down.
Shovel: You made need to dig yourself or help somebody else.
Jump Leads: You or somebody else may need these if you have a flat battery.
First Aid Kit: Always a must you never know when you will need this at any time of the year.
Sunglasses: (the glare of snow can dazzle you).
Sensible Footwear: Should you have to walk you will need good grip/waterproof footwear.
Medication: Keep medication on you if this has to be taken on regular basis.
Ice Scraper and De-icer: Just in case.
Warm Clothes and Blankets: It is always worth keeping spare clothes and blankets for yourself and passengers should you break down.
Torch: Spare batteries just in case or a wind up torch.
Warning Triangle: Place 50m or more behind your vehicle to allowing other motorist to be aware of a problem ahead.
Small Fire Extinguisher: It’s there just in case.
High Visibility Vest: You need to be seen should you leave your vehicle.
Tyre Weld/Spare Tyre: Tyre weld can be a temporary measure to allow you to continue travelling whilst looking for a garage to assist you.
Your Roadside Assistance Card: You will need this along with their contact number should you require their help.
Mobile Phone: You will need to let people know where you are.
Food/Water/Hot Drink: It doesn’t take a moment to put this together ready to take on your trip you will be pleased you packed your thermos flask if you are stuck in traffic or break down.
